Silk Abaca Rose

Step-by-step instructions for making a beautiful silk abaca rose from scratch, including painting and shaping the petals.

Projects / Silk Abaca Rose

Project Overview

Silk abaca is a relatively new fabric to the millinery trade. This vibrant material is made by weaving the processed stalks of the abaca tree, a banana palm from the Philippines, through silk.

Expert flower maker Anne Tomlin, who wrote this tutorial, says “In my world of flower making, I was intrigued to discover the kind of shapes I could make with silk abaca and how I could make use of its texture and pliability. It is really smooth, strong and fluid, is easy to colour with silk dyes and has an incredible sheen. Not only does it drape nicely, but it also behaves really well with heated flower tools.”

In this tutorial, Anne shares step-by-step instructions for making a beautiful silk abaca rose bloom from scratch, including the process of painting and shaping the petals. You can then move on to her Silk Abaca Leaves project to finish off your floral creation.

This silk abaca rose tutorial was originally published in HATalk Issue 139.
