Projects / Metallic Straw Bow

Project Overview

In this tutorial, London milliner Elena Shvab will show you how to create an asymmetrical straw bow.

A large bow is a great focal point for a small to medium-sized hat. This particular bow style works especially well on button hats and berets because it adds height and movement to flat crowns.

Elena is known for using metallic foil to turn everyday millinery materials into something exceptional. Often used for papercrafts, foil sheets can be fused to all kinds of surfaces with an adhesive fabric like Bondaweb. In this project, you will be covering a piece of straw with foil to add texture, shine and rigidity.

You can use any kind of straw for this, either from a brand new capeline or leftovers from another project. Elena used a leftover brim piece from a visca straw capeline. This shape, and its width and length, is perfect for making a bow. The Bondaweb and decorative foil can both be found online and from general fabric or crafting suppliers.
