Project Overview

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a lightweight and practically invisible headband from scratch.

Have you ever wondered how some of the top names in the millinery world manage to balance enormous headpieces on their client’s heads without any trace of a clip or an elastic? Often, handmade millinery wire headbands are the answer. Wrapped in tubular crin, they keep fascinators securely in place while almost disappearing into the hair.

Generally, people find that millinery wire headbands are much more comfortable to wear than plastic or metal ones. They are so light and they can be shaped to fit the wearer’s head perfectly. Plus, the double wire core makes them strong enough to support even the largest of millinery creations.

For a truly professional look, handmade headbands are a great choice. In this project, you will learn how to make a standard headband shape. Once you master the technique, however, it can be adapted. You may want to experiment with different styles, like the clever ‘kickstand’ shape for instance, to support and balance your headpieces.

This millinery wire headband tutorial was written by Denise Innes-Spencer of The British School of Millinery.
