Projects / Rounded Merry Widow Face Veil

Project Overview

In this project, millinery tutor Elena Shvab explains how to make a rounded veil mounted on a headband.

Merry widow veiling is such a classic look and rounded veils, which encircle the entire head, never go out of style. The key to a perfectly rounded veil is steam. Steaming veiling on a block gives it shape and body so that it stays off the wearer’s face and ‘stands alone.’

You can steam a veil on a domed crown block, a dolly head, or a poupée. If you don’t have any of these, you can even use a large styrofoam cake dome shape. You can find these online and I find that they are a very good (and inexpensive) substitute for a professional veiling block.

Elena finished her veil off with a simple fabric bow at the top of the crown to hide the stitching. You can do the same or choose a different trim.
