Project Overview

Creating your own custom millinery fabrics is a fool-proof way to make sure that your hats and headpieces are truly one of a kind. In this tutorial, London milliner Elena Shvab will show you how to add texture to your work by fusing two different fabrics. She will then explain how to use your unique new material to create a versatile textured fabric pompom hat trim.

For the first layer of your custom pompom material, you will need a plain fabric. I usually use something ivory or white, something neutral that will be a good contrast for the decorative top layer.

This top layer is where you want to add some texture and interest to your fabric. In this example, I used metallic netted veiling with quite a large weave. Lace would also work really well. In fact, once you get the hang of how to fuse fabrics together and see all of the amazing possibilities this technique opens up, the rest is absolutely up to your imagination.

Elena also teaches live and online metallic millinery workshops from her London studio. Visit www.elenashvab.com for more details.
