Atomic Age

Category: Traditional

Description

I am a huge fan of atomic and mid-century American design. This hat reflects a popular shape used during that time period, and it also reminds me of the early television antennas of the time. These modern ideas have been reflected using traditional sinamay blocking and brim techniques, with a more contemporary color palette and minimalist trim design.

Materials

  • Sinamay
  • wire
  • goose feathers
  • beads

Techniques

  • Double brimmed sinamay hat designed with symmetrical triangles.
  • Both brims are trimmed with sinamay, and one has been cut to wrap around the main brim.
  • A sinamay brim extension reflecting the brim shape also extends across the crown.
  • Stripped goose feathers have been decorated with glass beads, and cut asymettrical crab claw shapes are highlighted with spiked biot feather trimming.
  • The interior is lined with satin and grosgrain ribbon.
