Sea Mist Spring

Category: Modern

Description

This hat was inspired by the fusion of technology with modern fashion. I was also interpreting “fusion” as energy. Researching molecules and bonds, the idea of movement and expansion came to mind. This led me to work with the domed spring structure, a form that is not easily achieved in headwear without the use of technology.

Materials

  • 3D printed plastic
  • spray filler
  • spray paint
  • headband
  • comb
  • epoxy

Techniques

  • I 3D printed the spring form in white filament.
  • I then used sanding to even out the printed texture to be sprayed with filler primer.
  • Thermoplastics were also used for the 3D printed plastic to retain its structural integrity on the inside.
  • I used epoxy to further strengthen the form.
  • Layers of different paints were used used to achieve the smooth pearlescent texture.
