Description
Using techniques that I developed for my first collection in 2013 I wanted to create a light extension of my head or thoughts. The piece was originally a 2d outward projection of a balance in geometry where one line leads to another and the opposing forces of beads and wire influence the state of balance. As I started creating it I decided to mirror the piece at the back to give it a third dimension. This gives a view from all angles and adds balance on the head and not just within the structure. I wanted to show the geometry of structural equilibrium and how the headpiece can look balanced yet contrasting from every angle. The pull on the waxed linen between the structural wires exhibits the equity between opposing forces, where the same amount of tension must be used between beads to get to the state where pull balances and cancel one another.
I decided on a neutral colour palette as a reflection of the extension of the head and ones thoughts; and the never ending search for calmness and harmony in our mental state. The structural extension demonstrates constant flow in the use of only one wire and only one length of linen to complete the entire headpiece.
Materials
- Millinery wire
- Miyuki long magatama beads
- Silk rayon thread
- Irish waxed linen
- ferrule
Techniques
- Moulding the wire into the desired shape as per the design and to specific measurements
- Measure and mark the wire to specific bead placement
- Wrap silk thread around the wire adding beads where marked
- Wrap thread on areas where there are no beads
- Bend and create hairband and bind together with ferrule
- Pull string through beads in desired order from designed pattern
