Description
I love hat history and one of my favourite shapes of all times is the bonnet. As soon as the theme of the competition was announced my first thought was the buckram frame bonnet project in Issue 91. I wanted to update and modernise the shape, exaggerating the lateral flaps, leaving the back complete open and using modern materials like the crinoline. I remember reading the ‘Make a colourful crin Daisy’ in Issue 99 and thinking how cool it would be to embroider flowers and vegetation with tubular crinoline. I used vibrant colours, green fluo for the stems and leaves and three tones of pink for the flowers and the butterfly, to add a current vibe I left the crinoline tubes semi loose to add a 3D effect and another dimension to the embroidery. The pink crinoline harmonises and brings all the embroidery colours together. The transparency of the crin, on the outside and through the whole hat, helps to avoid the oppressive and claustrophobic feeling of the classic shape. I covered the inside of the bonnet with an ivory flock dotted crinoline inspired by the fabric used in the ‘Make a fabric covered poke bonnet’ project Issue 92, just an homage without being too literal. The transparency of the crinoline together with the dots create a wonderful and magical view of the embroidery from the inside of the hat. That’s magnified when the light goes through.
The hat is finished with Petersham ribbon on the edge and a classic bow to hold the bonnet in place.
