HATalk Competition Entry 2022
Linda Mirembe Nakimbugwe
Description
My “Happy Place” is being in nature. I love seeing the beauty in nature. I love walking in the woods or being by the sea or the river. I love all seasons but Spring and Summer are my favorite of all, where everything comes back to life beautiful and colourful. I am also the happiest when it rains and a rainbow appears somehow it symbolizes hope .
I used natural coloured sinamay and hessian to represent nature or earth, rainbow coloured organza, coloured flowers and feathers represent the beauty in everything. My entry for this year 2022 is Jophiel which means the Beauty of God or Divine Beauty in Hebrew. I have always been a dreamer and, being able to appreciate and see the beauty in everything and everyone makes my world a happier place.
Techniques:
- I used natural sinamay as a base for the crown, blocked on the calabash gourd my mother bought from Uganda.
- Stiffened, shaped and steamed a circular form of sinamay made up of small bias discs as a brim over the crown base which I stitched together.
- I cut petal shapes out of the rainbow organza, which I used tealight candle fire for the edges so that they don’t fray.
- Wired and covered over with satin for the flowers and hessian fabric to cover the recycled wire added the flowers using thread and hot glue
