Name of Hat
The Great Pink Heron
Description
In 2019 I saw a video of the Great Black Heron, or “The Umbrella Heron.” I immediately had the inspiration to create this bird as a hat. I do believe Nature gives the best inspiration as to design, therefore I am entering this creation which I was commissioned to manifest to be worn at the Royal Ascot 2022.
Techniques:
- Carved custom Crown Block with step on side of crown, for wire armature to be stitched.
- Pink Sinamay straw yardage = blocked crown.
- Crown edged wired, & inside head band, and securing head elastic.
- Main Turkey feathers mounted on wire armatures to form wings & tail feathers.
- Upper layers of Nagerorie Goose feathers to create layers of wings.
- Biot Feathers stitched to make neck feathers of bird.
Materials:
- Sinamay Straw yardage = Crown of hat.
- Coloured #19 Millinery wire for armature for Feather Mount
- Turkey feathers = main wing feathers
- Goose nagoire Feathers for 2nd, Primary covert layers of wings of hat.
- Dremil drill for needle stitching holes.
