Description

Inspired by contemporary artists, I decided to take a new approach with this theme. I injected a little fun and humour using bold colours and creating a play on words, while still using traditional millinery techniques.

As I allowed my creativity to flow, I envisioned the magnitude of water. Water, which is one of the four elements, induces a feeling of fear, what lurks beneath? And how will I be safe in the vast ocean without the confidence to swim well. Buoyancy aids can bring a sense of peace and protection. Combining Greek myths with water – when things get too deep, remember to stay afloat.

Techniques:

  • Block four layers of sinamay in ivory/white
  • Press and stiffen
  • Wire hat
  • Create letters using pinokpok
  • Sew sequins onto letters and attach to shape
  • Create pattern for orange segments and block
  • Attach hat elastic and secure to hat reinforce to protect
  • Stitch layers of sinamays together
  • Bind raw edge with silk threads

Premium sinamay
Standard sinamay
Pinokpok
Japanese crafted silk thread
Various other threads cotton and nylon
Miniature sequins
