Sparkle in the Rain

Description

I live in a land where it rains almost all the time, so with water as a theme it was inevitable that rain would feature in my entry – but how? I was struggling for inspiration but on a day when it was rainy and sunny at the same time hatspiration struck. I spotted the most gorgeous golden autumn leaf lying on the grass surrounded by globes of glittering raindrops. So I stopped and stared at it for a while mesmerised by the way the light was reflecting off the rain drops. And I wondered could I recreate this moment in millinery?

I chose “Sparkle in the Rain” for the name of my piece as in one of those strange cases of interconnectedness I was listening to the album “Sparkle in the Rain” by my favourite band Simple Minds. Hard to believe that the album is 40 years old and the teenager who rushed to the record store to buy it on release date has grown up to still love and be inspired by the music.

Techniques:

  • Blocking – 3 layers of sinamay for the base plus a piece for the back to hide the beading threads
  • Wiring the edge
  • Making sinamay bias binding to cover the edge of the fascinator, hairband and wire support
  • Beading – handsewing crystals and seed beads in a random pattern on the base.
  • Handstitching (and a spot of glue) the gold leaf/feather
  • Forming a wire support to hold the fascinator up in position
  • Handstitching gold sequin trim to the back, the wire support and metal comb to the hairband and then onto the fascinator

Materials:

Sinamay
Millinery wire
Sharpie pen
Crystal beads
Seed beads
Gold leaf upcycled from a hair clip (although I have been recently told that where I see a gold leaf it’s actually a gold feather!)
UHU glue
Sequin trim
Metal hair band
Metal comb
