Projects / Feather Flower

Project Overview

This delicate feather flower can be created with goose nagoire feathers and peacock strands. While it is made in a similar way to a feather peony, the end result is quite different because of the technique used to curl the feathers.

Goose nagoire are one of the most popular feathers for millinery because they are easy to cut, shape and curl. They are relatively inexpensive and it is not hard to find ethical suppliers who sell them from sustainable sources. Nagoire feathers also take dye well, so you can create flowers and hat trimmings in your own custom colours.

Before you begin assembling the flower, the nagoire feathers will need to be cut into petal shapes and curled. The quantity and size of the feathers required will depend on the size of the flower that you want to make. In this example, 56 feathers were cut into four different sizes ranging from 10cm (4”) to 5cm (2”) long. If desired, you can adapt the cutting instructions below to create feather flowers in different sizes.

This feather flower tutorial was written by Rachael Nixon of Chanix Millinery in Scotland.
