Project Overview
In this tutorial, London milliner Elena Shvab explains how to make gorgeous, hand-shaped organza flowers without the use of any flower making tools.
Organza is a thin, woven, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk. Modern organzas are often woven with synthetic filament fibres such as polyester or nylon. I personally prefer using synthetic organza for this particular technique because I like the way it reacts to heat and bonding. You could definitely give silk organza a try, or even experiment with other fabrics, once you’ve got the hang of the process, though.
The amount of organza required will vary depending on the number of flowers you want to make and how large you want them to be. You will be creating your own petal templates, so you can figure out how much fabric you need once you’ve chosen your petal shapes.
Each petal will contain two layers of organza and one layer of Bondaweb, a versatile iron-on transfer adhesive. I like the translucency of organza, hence I love working with this fabric. By fusing the organza with Bondaweb, you are able to retain this natural translucency while also making the fabric thicker and stronger. It also acts as a stiffener, so no extra stiffening is necessary.
