Petersham Hatband

Learn how to curve Petersham to create professional looking hat bands which lie flat when sewn around the crown of a hat.

Projects / Petersham Hatband

Project Overview

A Petersham hatband is the perfect way to finish off a traditional brimmed hat.

A hatband is the decorative band that goes around the base of a hat’s crown, covering the join between the brim and the crown. Hatbands can be made out of many different materials, including leathers, silk and cord, but a Petersham ribbon hatband is a classic choice for both felt and straw hats.

Curving Petersham ribbon is a fundamental skill when it comes to making hats. Every milliner and hatter is likely to use this simple, yet crucial, technique at one time or another.

Curving a Petersham hatband will make it lie flat against the circular shape of a hat so that it looks neat and is easier to sew. The same technique can also be used to curve an inner headband (sweatband).

In this tutorial by Michelle Osborne from Petershams Millinery Supplies in London, you will learn how to curve a length of Petersham ribbon to create a professional looking hatband which can be sewn around the crown of a hat.
