Projects / Pleated Sinamay Headpiece

Project Overview

Adding a pleated sinamay trim can transform an average button hat into a next level, race-day ready fashion statement.

Sinamay is a versatile millinery material. As well as being a great choice for blocking and draping projects, flat pieces of sinamay can also be folded. In fact, many origami techniques for making paper flowers and other designs actually work really well with sinamay.

Pleating is a method of folding commonly used in clothing and upholstery to reduce the width of a fabric. Folding sinamay in this way will give this versatile millinery material a brand new look and texture.

This pleated sinamay headpiece tutorial was written by London milliner and tutor Katherine Elizabeth, founder of the Katherine Elizabeth Academy for Millinery and Business. Katherine likes to make a different design every time she creates a hat. She made this one with navy and yellow sinamay and added a special metallic effect. The principle is the same no matter what colour you use, though. You can manipulate the technique into your own design.
