Project Overview
A simple yarn pompom is the perfect way to finish off a winter beret or beanie and can also be used as a fun decoration for other hat styles. If you look around the house, you will probably find that you already have everything that you need to make one. Just be prepared to make a bit of a mess!
In this quick tutorial, Australian milliner Catherine Ellen explains how she makes yarn pompoms to go with her signature woven berets.
Of course, pompoms are not just for hats – they have lots of other fashion and craft uses. These yarn pompoms work really well as Christmas tree ornaments, for instance!

- 2 empty toilet paper rolls
- Good pair of sharp scissors
- 2 pieces of card cut into circles which are roughly the required size of the finished pompom
- Yarn
