Hackle Spray Fascinator

A well made hackle spray is beautiful in its own right, so very little work is needed to turn it into a stunning feather fascinator.

Projects / Hackle Spray Fascinator

Project Overview

This hackle spray fascinator is a great starter project if you are new to millinery or want to make a feathered headpiece quickly.

Hackle feathers are generally taken from the neck plumage of domestic fowl. Rooster, or coque, hackle feathers are the most readily available and can be purchased from arts and crafts stores, millinery suppliers and specialist feather shops.

A hackle spray is a ready-made ‘mount’ consisting of lots of hackle feathers grouped onto a thick, bound wire. The feathers are normally pre-stripped and trimmed so that they are uniform in size.

A well made hackle spray is beautiful in its own right, so very little work is needed to turn it into a stunning fascinator.

All you need to make a hackle spray fascinator is a tiny piece of sinamay, a hair band and a few common craft supplies and sewing notions.

This tutorial was written by HATalk Founder Ann Morse-Brown and was originally published in her book, Make Fascinators.
