Project Overview

In this tutorial, American milliner Diana Cavagnaro shares an easy way to transform an unblocked straw hood or capeline into a casual, packable travel hat…

Mr. John was a famous milliner who had his own salon in New York City until 1970. He is credited with making a packable hat for travel and, ever since, hat lovers have wanted these straw hats. I call them my suitcase hats because you can throw them in your suitcase and away you go!

The following instructions feature a number of different types and colours of straw. I personally prefer to use parasisal but this technique will also work with other varieties.
