Hat Making Project
Straw and Sinamay Hat
Block and sew a wide-brimmed straw and sinamay hat.
Projects / Straw and Sinamay Hat
Project Overview
Learn to make a straw and sinamay hat using traditional methods. A classic choice for Royal Ascot, the Kentucky Derby, this wide-brimmed hat style will look super stylish on a sunny day.
Completing this tutorial will help you to master the fundamental skills that you need to make a hat. You will learn how to block using the string groove method, how to sew a crown and brim together, how to finish a brim edge and how to add a Petersham sweatband. When you are finished, you will have created a classic straw and sinamay hat.
This hat project was written by Jenny Pfanenstiel of Formé Millinery in Louisville, Kentucky. It was originally published in her instructional hat making book, The Making of a Milliner.
