Projects / Covering Metal Headbands

Project Overview

Out of the range of pre-made headbands available from millinery suppliers, uncovered metal bands are a sturdy option and a great alternative to the plastic ones that can break with heavy handling.

There are a number of advantages to covering a metal headband. For instance, it makes it easier to secure the band to a hat or headpiece because you can sew through the bind and hide the stitches. Adding a fabric covering also gives the headband some purchase on the head, particularly for non-textured hair types. Plus, it enables you to customize a headband to match the colour of a client’s hair.

In this tutorial Martine from Martine Henry Millinery demonstrates how to cover a metal headband with two different materials — velvet ribbon and tulle.
