Hat Making Project

Freeform Felt Headpiece

Use felt draping techniques to create a unique freeform felt headpiece with cut out detail.

Projects / Freeform Felt Headpiece

Project Overview

Freeform felt hand shaping, also known as draping, is a way to create hats and headpieces without using hat blocks. By using steam effectively, you can shape the material with just your hands.

For this project, you will be making a two-part felt headpiece consisting of a base and a trim. You can plan out a design before you begin or just go with the flow and see what happens when you give your creativity free reign. It is possible to create some really unique shapes using this technique, including asymmetrical, floating and dynamic silhouettes.
