Wired Crin Brim

Make a semi-transparent hat brim with wired diamond pattern crin.

Projects / Wired Crin Brim

Project Overview

In this tutorial, milliner Elena Shvab explains how to make a wired hat brim out of crin. Crin, also known as crinoline or horsehair, is a synthetic netting made from polyester. It is produced in a range of widths, colours and patterns, as well metallic threaded and pleated variations. It is available as a flat material and also in a tubular form which is very useful for structural millinery work and creating custom wire headbands.

For this project, you’ll be using diamond pattern crin, which has threads woven through in a diamond pattern. These threads are made from natural materials, so they can be glued together. The body of the crin, made from synthetic polyester, does not work well with glue. This brim technique will work best with diamond pattern crin or other varieties that incorporate natural materials.
