Hat Making Project

Finding the Bias

Learn how to find the bias of a piece of sinamay, or other woven millinery material, quickly and easily.

Projects / Finding the Bias

Project Overview

Since the ‘Golden Rule’ of millinery is to always work on the bias, it is very important to be able to find it!

The bias of a textile runs at a 45° angle to both the warp and weft threads, or diagonal to the grain of the fabric, as shown in the diagram below.

step 1 How to Make Abaca Silk Rose Leaves

The bias cut technique was popularised by French fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet in the 1920s, who used it to create couture gowns which would cling to the wearer’s figure. Because fabrics which are cut on the bias can be stretched around curves to create a sense of movement, it is the perfect cut for fitting around the head and for making many common millinery trimmings.

If you are struggling to figure out how to cut your sinamay on the bias, this little trick will really help.
