Projects / Poke Bonnet
Project Overview
This project is the second in a two-part series on bonnet making by theatrical milliner Ani Townsend. First, you learned how to make a bonnet frame out of buckram. Now you are ready to line, cover and trim your poke bonnet.
A poke bonnet has a small crown and a long brim that often covers the face. Popular throughout the 19th century, there were many variations on the poke bonnet over the years. The shape Ani demonstrates here dates back to the early 1800s, also known as the Romantic Era.
If you have been commissioned to make a poke bonnet for a play or historical reenactment, you can adapt this project to make the shape you need. You can also experiment with different trimmings and fabrics. There are lots of great images online or in fashion history books to give you ideas about how bonnets were decorated during different periods.
This poke bonnet tutorial was written by Ani Townsend of the Milliners Guild in Bristol, England.
